Every company needs an individual who can keep records of important information, answer phone calls, speak to clients, organize business meetings, process payroll, and perform many other tasks. These are the responsibilities of clerk typists, who are an integral part of companies all over the world.
The most important requirement for clerk typists is the ability to type at least 40 words per minute; so much information is given at once that quick typing skills are vital to record everything. This information not only must be typed quickly, but accurately, as well. Even the smallest mistake can be costly due to the information's tremendous importance. A friendly attitude is a must, as clerk typists communicate frequently with important clients and accept the role of a liaison to keep customers happy. Organizational skills are also important in order to quickly file, receive, and search for documents to maintain the flow of business.
If clerk typists want to succeed, they must be as knowledgeable as possible about computer hardware and software. They must be proficient with printers, calculators, copy machines, fax machines, and calculators to ensure efficient productivity in their business. Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Quickbooks, and other applications is also important for keeping records and completing payroll.
Clerk typists generally work regular business hours, Monday through Friday, from early in the morning to late in the afternoon. A degree is not required for this position, but a typing certification is helpful to prove typing skills.
Clerk Typist Tasks
Preforms clerical duties as needed, such as data entry, answering telephone, and bookkeeping.
Updates and maintains files, records and other written materials.
Transfer handwritten information onto word processor in a final polished form.
Process travel needs including itinerary for air, car, train, hotel and other travel arrangements.
