Job Description for Coffee Shop/Deli Attendant
A coffee shop/deli attendant is the backbone of a casual food and beverage service operation and is responsible for serving and interacting with customers, handling payments, and ensuring the business operates in a clean and efficient manner. Many food service analysts believe customers will forgive substandard food once or twice and return, but may never forgive poor service. Thus, the financial health of coffee shop and delis relies heavily on an efficient, well-trained, and service-oriented staff.Read More...
The main aspect of the job is simply listening and understanding customer orders. The attendant should be ready to ask clarifying questions and able to execute those orders in an efficient manner; this can be as simple as making a cup of coffee or cappuccino, or as complex as preparing quick-serve sandwiches or other food and beverage items. The attendant will need thorough training on all equipment he/she is expected to use and will also need to develop familiarity with the menu, all food and beverages included.
In addition, attendants will typically work a cash register or point-of-sale computer and must accurately process all orders and payments. During busy shifts, it is normal for one attendant to handle customer orders while another manages the register and payments.
For most businesses, an attendant job at a coffee shop or deli is entry-level and has no strict educational requirements. Attendants must be fluent in the native language of customers in every way (reading, writing, listening, speaking), and have good communication and service skills. Most jobs are in a casual food service environment and consist of 6-8 hour shifts with minimal breaks and down-time.
