Community health coordinators work primarily for local governments or non-profit organizations to manage health education programs which help community members to maintain healthy lifestyles. They typically plan, implement, and monitor these programs to encourage healthy lifestyles and maintain a healthy environment.
Community health coordinators may serve as resources to assist families, individuals, or health care workers in their community and ensure they have adequate health information. They must ensure that the community has necessary tools to make informed health decisions and provide relevant information related to communicable disease prevention, so leadership and strong verbal and written communication skills are important in this position. These coordinators must be able to work well with diverse groups of people, and the ability to speak a second language, such as Spanish, is also helpful. They may need to read relevant professional journals to stay up-to-date with public health issues, as well as attend workshops or conferences relevant to their job.
Community health coordinators must have a bachelor’s degree or higher in a health-related field, and a certification in community health is also beneficial. Employers often prefer candidates who have prior experience in case management, social work, counseling, or community health, and these coordinators must be able to work independently with minimal or no supervision as well as in a team environment.
