Compliance and privacy officers ensure that their company complies with industry and company rules, as well as that confidential corporate information remains private. These officers explain the content and meaning of rules to employees within their organization, as well as ensure those rules are followed; they also make sure that the existing policies meet current regulation requirements. In some businesses, the position of compliance and privacy officer is split into two positions; smaller businesses are more likely to employ a single person for both jobs. Education and experience requirements for this position vary by industry and organization. Generally, compliance and privacy officer jobs require knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and laws in their industry, as well as company rules; this may require, for example, a background in healthcare, finance or law that includes at least a bachelor's degree with post-baccalaureate education preferred or required. Compliance and privacy officers should have excellent verbal and written communication skills, be able to work collaboratively in a team setting, be able to maintain strict confidentiality and have excellent organizational skills.
