Computer / Network Support Technician Advice

Q: What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Computer / Network Support Technician in Zanesville:
"Stress level."
I wish I would have known how much more stress there is doing to this job in a school district. I never experienced this in corporate environment as much. In a school...Too many chiefs and not enough indians. There is the notion that teachers hands will be held for all things technology and there is little expectation that they have a certain skill set coming in so that they can use technology in their classrooms. The pay is wildly disproportionate to teacher salaries, yet I am expected to know what they do and how to use it with technology but they do not feel they need to know any technology. School: You don't get ahead without a degree. Me: 32 years experience....I find that insulting!

Computer / Network Support Technician in Detroit:
"Starter Job, Not A Career."
Many jobs in this career field are very low level jobs. They are extremely repetitive jobs where you perform carefully defined functions, such as installing a certain piece of software in a certain way or getting support for an issue in a certain way. There are also few companies that provide a career path out of technical support. This is a field where one must create their opportunities, as few opportunities exist for those who aren't self-motivated to improve and learn new things. However, if you are the type of person who likes well-defined, repetitive tasks, you're interested in computers and you want a relatively high base salary for an entry-level position that requires nothing more than self-taught experience, this job is hard to beat in that respect.
