Getting a raise: ask for one
First - ask for a raise. If you don't ask or bring the subject up they might think that perfectly happy with your current pay and won't give you one. Companies are in bussines to make a profit and giving you a raise will cut into thier profit margin. Second - tell them why you desrve one. There are many reasons for you to get a raise. One is inflation. At an average inflation rate of 3.5%/year you would be getting relatively less pay if you didn't get a raise of that amount or more. Did your responsibilities increase? Are you are more productive than you were a year ago? Did you make any significant contributions to the company? You may desrve a raise. The company doesn't care if you have to pay for your new Land Rover or that your 7 kids are hungry. Third - Refused a raise? Don't be afraid to look for a new job. When you find one and have been made an offer, let your current employer know. Give them the opportunity to make a counter offer. They may be able to give you that raise after all.
