Those in this position must be able to use and operate computer equipment and know how to interpret electrical schematics and diagrams. A high school diploma or an equivalent degree is necessary. Computer operations specialists must also have taken some formal courses in information technology, networking, or computers, though some employers will allow relevant work experience as a substitute. These specialists must be knowledgeable of both computer hardware/assembly and operating systems software.
Computer operations specialists work in data centers within a company's networking or information technology department as part of a supervised team which maintains the operations of data entry computer systems. They work normal day-time business hours and some day-time weekend hours. There are rarely overtime opportunities, and positions may be full-time or part-time.
They generally work indoors performing tasks that require minimal physical effort; however, the work is mentally-tasking by nature and they must be able to troubleshoot problems and perform repetitive tasks with good mental stamina. Good communication and teamwork skills are also necessary, as computer operations specialists work in teams and communicate regularly with data entry technicians to solve computer-related problems.
