Regardless of how well you do your job you will be rated on your attitude and by what time you show up. If you go the extra mile you be rewarded ten fold, not just in pay increases and merit rewards but in referrals, references and long-term relationships. Some of my best references came from college professors and employers I worked for in high school and college.

Involve yourself in as much learning and variety of human resource topics that you can. Listen carefully to the client's needs. Network extensively within your profession; for they have the answers you're often looking for.
