Most of consulting engineers' work is done independently, but coordination with clients and their employees is frequent; this ranges from working with internal consultants and employees to high level management. Hours for the positions are usually limited to general business hours, but flexibility may be required. Aside from travel, most work is done in an indoor office environment with minimal physical requirements associated with the job.
A bachelor's degree in an engineering field is usually considered the minimum educational requirement. Most positions also require five or more years of experience working with technology companies in a management position and, in some cases, hands-on experience with the technology being used. Interpersonal, writing, analysis, and communication skills are also necessary.
