Job Description for Control / Automation Engineer

A control or automation engineer's main responsibility is supporting all projects that involve controls or automation. They establish the company's standards for the products they help create, as well as recognize issues, address them, and implement fixes quickly and effectively. Control or automation engineers also need to devise layouts and studies to determine the best and most efficient ways to solve engineering issues that may arise. These individuals also need to work with engineers from other departments to ensure that controls fit within the design guidelines of the product as well.

A control or automation engineer generally works full time during regular business hours, although overtime may be required depending on the needs of the company and its projects. There is a possibility of travel depending on the company or projects as well.

In most cases, a control or automation engineer must have at least a bachelor's degree in a related field, although a master's degree may be preferred. Normally, at least five years of relevant experience is needed as well. Control or automation engineers should have strong computer and communication skills are needed. They should be able to work well in a team environment, as well as on their own with minimal supervision.
Control / Automation Engineer Tasks
  • Troubleshoot and maintain equipment and associated software and interfaces.
  • Assess and make recommendations about configurations, upgrades, and other process changes.
  • Coach and mentor staff in use, validation, and quality control for equipment.
  • Test, validate, and ensure quality control for products.
