Control / Automation Engineer Advice

Q: What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Control / Automation Engineer in Boston:
"Get a Degree."
I started out as a technician and became a self taught engineer. Thirty years later it is difficult to find an appropriate position without a degree. Hiring managers have become ignorant of the requirements of the positions and hope that a degree will make up for their ignorance. All that does is place unqualified people in roles that will frustrate them. We are losing the abilities that time teaches and no one is capable of noticing.

Control / Automation Engineer in Minneapolis:
"Think ahead."
Have a plan for advancement and map out your course. Never stop learning and always keep high standards. Your skill will distinguish you, so don't get caught up in office politics.
