Child care coordinators are responsible for overseeing child care centers. This is a management position, so these coordinators often have management duties such as hiring, scheduling, human resources, employee evaluations, and employee discipline. They must also ensure that the child care center is clean, free of hazards and risks of injury, and compliant with licensing and accreditation requirements, health codes, and applicable laws.
Child care coordinators often oversee food plans for their facilities, as well as employee scheduling and creating schedules within the classroom; they may also be in charge of developing an early learning curriculum. Strong communication skills are important in order to communicate well with students, parents, and other staff members, and these coordinators also organize parent orientations, workshops, and conferences. They should also be able to provide good customer service while adhering fully to the mission of the child care center.
Proficient computer skills are important in this position in order to create reports and communicate efficiently; valid CPR certification is also a common requirement and should be obtained prior to being hired. Medical exams may be necessary prior to being hired in order to comply with child care licensing requirements. An associate’s or bachelor’s degree in early child education may be required, though some positions accept adequate work experience as a substitute.
