Copy Editor Advice

What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?

Copy Editor in Seattle:
"Get Technical Skills In Addition To English (writing) Degree."
Over the years, I've accumulated either through self-study or on-the-job training skills in Microsoft Word and various desktop publishing, web publishing and image software. It is, in my opinion, extremely difficult to get a job using your English degree without these skills. In addition, make sure you are familiar with the standard style reference materials: Chicago Manual of Style, AP Manual, and Gregg Reference Manual. In whatever job you acquire, keep a portfolio of your work.
