County commissioners work in local government and should have a strong desire to help the community, as they are responsible for administrating county governments in certain states. This is considered the oldest form of government, as not every state in the United States still has a county commission, but these commissioners serve both legislative and executive duties, approve budgets, and oversee the spending of county employees.Read More...
County commissioners typically work with teams of three to five people who are also commissioners to complete tasks such as issuing bonds, collecting and disposing trash, managing county parks, administering jails and courts, and collecting property and sales tax. They usually work indoors in an office setting, but some travel may also be necessary. A bachelor's degree in a political or law enforcement-related field and/or several years of experience in local government are generally required for this position, and although they are usually available during regular business hours, shifts in this position can vary greatly depending on the tasks at hand.
