Courtesy clerks are responsible for helping customers in the checkout areas of supermarkets and other retail locations, and common tasks focus on bagging customers’ groceries and offering them assistance to their cars; these clerks are also important for checkout lines to function properly and reduce the workloads of cashiers. When customers request assistance, the clerk should escort them to their vehicles to help load the groceries. In some positions, they may also be expected to help customers load items onto conveyor belts for checkout.
Courtesy clerks should not only aim for efficiency in bagging, but also ensure that items are properly organized so they will not be broken or contaminated. The job can be physically demanding, as these clerks will have to carry out repetitive motions and some items may be heavy. They will also have to stand for most of their shifts.
Those in this position must be kind courteous to customers, and may be expected to greet customers who enter and thank them when they leave.
When not working at the checkout stand, they may perform price-checks, help customers locate items within the store, or tidy the store by organizing display stands or mopping/sweeping floors,
