Much of the customer sales representatives job involves sales work. They must possess expert knowledge of their company’s product and services, which may require frequent continuing education. They are expected to be able to give accurate and informative answers to any potential customer’s questions, and, depending on the business, they may be called upon to make discretionary changes to pricing structure based on the needs of a potential account.
The CSR also is responsible for customer retention. A good customer sales representative always is reaching out to current customers for feedback on purchased products and services, to gauge their satisfaction and address any shortfalls. Additionally, the CSR must answer any concerns of existing customers and facilitate any special needs or considerations.
A customer sales representative normally works regular business hours during the work week. While many individuals with this job receive a flat salary, it is normal in this field that a significant portion of compensation is determined by commissions based upon sales. Thus, the actual wage of a CSR may be strongly tied to job performance.
Good verbal and written communication skills are a must for CSRs. Depending on the business, a high school degree may be required; however, many organizations prefer a minimum of an associate's degree. Sales experience and customer service experience are often desirable and may be requirements for certain positions in this field.
