Cutting, punching, and press machine setters/operators/tenders for metal and plastic work with machines to manipulate metal and plastic for their employer.
This job requires the use of tools such as calipers, cutting machines, hammers, hydraulic press brakes, drill presses, and radial drills. Technology that may be utilized includes computer aided manufacturing (CAM) software, spreadsheet software, word processing software, industrial control software, and inventory management software. These professionals are responsible for handling and moving objects, controlling machines and processes, inspecting equipment, and documenting necessary information. They are also in charge of performing physical activity, monitoring processes and surroundings, and judging the quality of work performed.
The job requires having knowledge of math (ranging from arithmetic to calculus and statistics), as well as knowledge of raw materials, production processes, quality control, and techniques used to maximize the effective manufacture of goods. These individuals need to possess knowledge of relevant machines and tools, as well as business and management principles such as production methods and coordinating people and resources. The work involves using skills such as operation monitoring, critical thinking, monitoring, active listening, and reading comprehension.
A high school diploma or equivalent is needed for this position; previous experience in a similar role is generally required or preferred. Needed physical skills include arm/hand steadiness, dexterity, and the ability to stand for long periods of time. There may be uncomfortable noise levels that are sometimes distracting, and there is the possibility of being exposed to contaminants.
