DOT laws are enacted specifically to help ensure that commercial freight traffic transported by truck and passenger traffic can safely share the same highways. Thus, one of the main jobs of a compliance officer is to ensure that all drivers employed or contracted by the company for over-the-road shipping duties have valid commercial licenses. The compliance officer not only ensures that the company holds documentation on all their drivers, he or she also carefully monitors any complaints or citations against them and ensures that any issues are properly taken care of.
The education requirements to work as a DOT compliance officer are usually either an associate's or bachelor’s degree in logistics or business. Most DOT compliance officers will work as part of a logistics team in a smaller role to gain experience before applying to this position. The compliance officer typically works in an office environment, but occasional travel or fieldwork may also be required.
