Job Description for Dean of Graduate Studies

A dean of graduate studies oversees and leads the staff, students, and university operations of a graduate school. Duties vary from university to university, but in general, the dean of graduate studies helps to develop and coordinate various programs within the graduate program of a university. The dean is often in charge of hiring and firing staff and will also be able to make suggestions for employee promotions and tenure. The dean may provide guidelines as to staffing levels and come up with ideas for new programs within the university.


Dean of Graduate Studies Tasks

  • Develop and support collaborative initiatives on campus and with external partners.
  • Identify and implement innovations in pedagogy, resource utilization, and marketing.
  • Oversee graduate programs, including student enrollment and academic goals.
  • Track and increase student enrollment, retention, graduation, and evaluation rates.
