Design directors generally work in offices during traditional weekly business hours, though some light travel may be required depending on the employer. Formal education requirements also depend on the employer; however, candidates should have a bachelor’s degree in advertising, marketing, journalism, design, or media, and many employers now require a master’s degree. Extensive knowledge is required in areas such as account planning, advertising management, and media design, and some organizations may require at least seven years of experience.
Design directors have a wide array of responsibilities, including: supervising advertising campaigns within their agency; collaborating with other departments within the agency; serving as head of the creative staff; creating budgets for campaigns; negotiating contracts; hiring staff for advertising teams; working with digital media and sales teams; final approval of all advertising campaigns; serving as a liaison between the client and design team; approval of advertising material; and evaluation of the advertising team as a whole.
Those in this position should have natural leadership skills, strong communication skills, and a high degree of creativity. They must also be business-minded with the ability to multi-task to work on multiple projects at once.
