Design engineers are in charge of creating blueprints and schematics for systems, machines, and equipment. They usually work with a team that includes several members, including mechanical engineers. Design engineers must have advanced computer and applications knowledge. An engineer must be able to thoroughly understand all of the machines and structures they draw, as well as understand the principles of electrical currents and how they work. To become a design engineer, a bachelor’s degree is needed in civil, mechanical, or electrical engineering. New engineers are also required to pass a written licensing exam to determine their understanding of the fundamentals of engineering.
