Clinical data management directors interact primarily with technical employees as subordinates who are responsible for data collection, pipelines, the downstream warehouse, and reporting and analytics. Policies must be established to ensure compliance with all medical guidelines and regulations concerning data privacy, and these directors also plan and carry out periodic security and privacy audits.
A college degree in a scientific field is often required for this position, and knowledge of drug development processes with an emphasis on clinical trials, especially handling data from clinical trials, is also important. Clinical data management directors must be able to understand and set budgets related to data management, as well as how to establish the project team's goals in a cost-efficient manner. They must also combine team-management skills with technical knowledge, a broad understanding of regulations related to clinical data, interacting with customers, and articulating plans to set and achieve data management goals.
