Directors of financial planning and analysis serve an oversight role in most corporations, supervising the development, implementation, and subsequent ongoing maintenance of financial data reporting to ensure the overall accuracy of the data. In addition to ongoing financial data, these directors are also frequently involved in the analysis of operational data, general statistical reports of corporate performance, and developing reports that recommend courses of action based on the spectrum of data analysis.Read More...
These broad responsibilities correspond with a number of more specific duties. For example, these directors lead staff in the creation of the ad hoc reports and analyses, as well as the distribution of these reports to management. Directors interface with general group managers to find performance initiatives and corresponding measurable indicators for use in tracking corporate performance. They also supervise the corporate budgeting process and related financial models. Directors also use financial data to help guide business initiatives by reviewing historical trends and forecasting future trends, then sharing the data with managers and executives. They serve a leadership role in the process of developing Web applications to share financial data with appropriate employees and departments.
Most companies require their directors of financial planning and analysis to hold at least a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field, in addition to a decade or more of experience in the field. Large corporations often require that the directors are certified public accountants (CPAs). Management experience is also an important component of the directors’ work history. Necessary skills include financial analysis, computer competence, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and aptitude with organization and multitasking. Most directors work full time in an office environment.
