Respiratory directors are responsible for directing respiratory services for their organizations, including managing a group of medical specialists and providing leadership to coordinate and motivate respiratory personnel. These directors must participate in training sessions for new respiratory techniques and technology, and typically work in a medical setting with other professionals to provide quality care and service for respiratory patients.
These directors use a personal computer to log information, answer to emails, and write reports, and they're also tasked with coordinating staff schedules, managing budgets, contacting vendors, and hiring and training new staff. They should be able to stand on their feet for several hours at a time and use their management experience to multitask on different projects at once, and strong communication skills are also important for interacting with patients and their families and explaining respiratory processes in simple terms.
These directors use their clinical experience to participate in respiratory research efforts to provide better treatment, and must also follow strict privacy and safety protocols to ensure that patients' rights are respected. They may create respiratory initiatives and follow up with performance measurement, and also implement policy/development initiatives for cost-effective offerings and advanced respiratory devices. They also analyze respiratory processes and make recommendations for greater efficiency. A bachelor's degree in a medical field and specialization in respiratory systems are generally required for this position, and prior experience and internships are highly beneficial. Industry and leadership certifications are also helpful.
