Student services directors are responsible for a number of tasks related to their institution's student body. They are typically in charge of developing guidelines for students, recommending new or revised policies that correspond with state and federal guidelines, managing student services staff, and overseeing budgets for student services. These directors also review and approve distribution of materials for students, parents, and staff members, as well as develop and approve programs targeted at students. Student services directors typically work in an office environment during regular business hours. They are generally hired by educational institutions such as colleges, universities, and high schools. On a daily basis, student service directors work and communicate with students, parents, staff members, and other internal and external individuals.
Student services directors are generally required to have a master's degree in education, education administration, or a related field. At least five years of experience in a related experience is another common requirement. A relevant professional license, an administration and supervision endorsement, and a pupil personnel license may be preferred. Student services directors must have knowledge of their institution's board policies and procedures, as well as relevant federal, state, and local laws. Some other useful traits for student service directors include the ability to effectively communicate, organizational skills, and multitasking abilities. The ability to develop and oversee programs targeted at students is required as well.
