A director of catering and convention services oversees and manages the conference rooms and meeting areas for a business, typically a hotel or resort, and ensures that all events run as planned. They generally reserve conference rooms and coordinate services for groups and organizations which hold meetings, conventions, and other events on property grounds. The director of catering and convention services must have excellent communication skills, as he/she must meet with groups and organizations to plan meetings and special events. They must also have excellent written communication skills, as they may sign contractual agreements and must keep records of all communications.
A Bachelor’s degree in Hospitality, Restaurant Management or Hotel Management is generally required to reach this position. Some programs may be accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Programs in Hospitality Administration, though specific education requirements vary by employer. Prior work experience may be required, and may substitute for educational experience in some situations. Some organizations may offer on-the-job training programs.
The director of catering and convention services may work a variety of shifts, and may work nights, weekends, or holidays as needed by clients. Work may be indoors or outdoors, depending on the particular site. Some travel may be required to meet with clients.
