Some dogs may have been acquired from the street or may have temperament issues, due to abuse and lack of care in the past. Therefore, it is important to be able to control dogs of varying types of nature and to be patient at the same time. All safety and hygiene regulations must be observed. Both part-time and full-time jobs are usually offered. The assistant will typically be in charge of administering food to dogs, and the appropriate amount and type of food should be given to the dog, depending on age, size, and condition. If the medical status of the dog appears to be deteriorating, the dog kennel assistant should report this to management or the veterinarian on duty. This job can sometimes be physically strenuous, as the assistant will have to pick up or control dogs that may weigh 100 pounds or more. The assistant will also spend a lot of the shift standing or walking, as the dogs will usually have to be taken on walks. The kennel assistant may have to provide grooming services to dogs, typically involving shampooing, trimming, and nail clipping. Keeping the area clean is an important part of this job.
Experience is preferred for some jobs, though many jobs will offer on the job training. Some jobs will require working weekends, holidays, and nights, as care needs to be administered to dogs at all times. Some employers require assistants to have a high school diploma, and others require related experience.
