Most of the time, drafting supervisors work for engineering firms or engineering departments at corporation. They must have a solid understanding of drafting techniques and a familiarity with engineering terminology. They must have computer skills. They must be thoroughly familiar with Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) equipment to provide support to engineers. They must have a high skill level in CAD software being used by their organization, such as SolidWorks. They must be skilled in computer usage and associated software, which include Microsoft Office and database programs. They must be familiar with their employers' email system and internal chat platform.
They must make sure that their drafters efficiently and correctly prepare layouts, detail drawings, assembly drawings, various sketches, and diagrams. They must be detail-oriented. They must have leadership skills. They must have experience as drafters and/or drafting supervisors. They usually must have an associate's degree in Computer Aided Drafting and math, and equivalent experience and training in drafting is often preferred. A bachelor's degree in a relevant field is preferred. They must have exceptional interpersonal skills, and excellent oral and written communications skills are required.
Drafting supervisors must be a liaison between their drafters and engineers, who are their internal clients. Drafting supervisor must have the ability to interpret various instructions given to them by engineers. They must understand various diagrams and schedule forms. Drafting supervisors may be required to train and coach drafters. They must continuously have their skills up to date in order to keep up with new technologies. They must be aware of new technology that is available in the market place. Drafting supervisors do not usually travel. They must evaluate their employees' performance on a regular basis and give their employees feedback in a timely manner.
