E-learning specialists are in charge of designing, developing, and evaluating online training content. They use strong communication skills to convey learning concepts to those being trained, and they innovate and improve current tutorials and classroom offerings so they are more engaging and scalable. E-learning specialists use their strong leadership and instruction skills to motivate professionals to learn ideas and concepts in more efficient ways. Often, they must convey technical processes in simple terms to non-technical individuals.
E-learning specialists use a personal computer to access content, update content, and maintain records; additionally, they use a variety of web-based tools to enhance training efforts. In addition to the material they present, e-learning specialists must have extensive knowledge about the subjects on which they train and be able to answer questions at seminars, trainings, and events. E-learning specialists also must possess strong technical knowledge to identify problems are they arise and recommend possible solutions based on their expertise with e-learning tools.
A bachelor's degree in communication, information technology, education, or a related field is typically required for this position. In addition, work experience in a teaching or training capacity is generally required or preferred as well. Industry and leadership certifications may be beneficial.
