Those in this position are tasked with developing programs to ensure that all workers perform their jobs safely. They must set goals and objectives for what they hope to achieve and ensure that each department is aware of what must be done to keep everyone safe. Such goals include ensuring that equipment is handled properly, work areas are safe and hazard-free, business practices are environmentally friendly, and emergency evacuation plans are in place. If an accident occurs on the business's premises, these administrators must be there to investigate it. They are responsible for finding out what happened, who it happened to, and how to prevent it from happening again, and all information must be recorded in an EHS data-processing application such as MESH Suite; this applies to accidents, illnesses, risk assessments, and other important information. Communication skills are very important, as EHS administrators must spread the message of safety to each and every employee.
Above all, those in this position must maintain extensive knowledge of fire safety, building safety, and OSHA and EPA regulations. Some certifications may be required depending on the employer.
