Positions as an environmental health and safety (EHS) inspector are common in a wide variety of industries, ranging from manufacturing companies to telecommunications businesses. Job requirements usually include at least a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Some jobs may require experience, but many are open to entry-level candidates. Candidates must have working knowledge of safety regulations, commonly set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and other agencies. Specific knowledge of industry technology and products may also be necessary for certain jobs.
Specific duties may vary from job to job, but common tasks include coordinating details of safety programs and protocols to ensure that all regulations are being met efficiently. They are also responsible for preparing reports and logs for incidents, as well as measuring levels (such as for a chemical in the soil, air, or water) on a regular basis to track safety. Additionally, on-the-job training and classroom teaching for employees and workers are required of EHS inspectors. These inspectors may work as part of a small EHS team in large companies or independently in smaller companies. These professionals also interact with external agencies and agents, as well as communicate with workers and management on company progress and standing.
Some positions may involve exposure to hazardous materials or environments, but risks should be minimal with proper safety protocols. Work can take place indoors and/or outdoors depending on the specific job, and hours vary depending on the needs of the employer.
