The officer will handle complaints about discrimination and will investigate the claims. If the claims are found to be valid, then efforts to remedy the situation will be planned and carried out. What is done may have to be adapted, depending on the situation, but it is also important to create standards and procedures. That way, objectivity will not compromised. The officer also oversees procedures for hiring and for promotions to make sure that they are fair and non-discriminative. The EEO officer may also be responsible for creating and administering diversity programs. Company policies and handbooks may be created and modified by the EEO officer. Training may also be administered by the officer, in order to provide training to employees.
This job is usually done in an office environment, though the EEO officer may have to travel from one department or branch to another, in order to oversee various parts of the company. An EEO officer is often required to have a bachelor’s degree in a related field, and some employers require a master’s degree. Depending on the position, varying years of experience may also be required.
