These operators control equipment used in public works projects. They must work well on teams with other operators to finish work in a timely manner, but also independently with minimal supervision. They often work at public works sites and wear protective gear to avoid accidents while working; all rules of these work sites must be followed closely to protect all employees from risks of injury. They receive specific training for this equipment and operate it according to specific standards to maximize efficiency and minimize the use of company resources.
These equipment operators are also responsible for maintenance and basic troubleshooting of their equipment. When problems arise, they should be reported to the supervisor of the public works department. Many safety inspections are necessary before starting work, and relevant reports may need to be written. When operating equipment outside, established road patterns should be followed to avoid various hazards and weather conditions.
Those in this position should be able to stand on their feet for several hours and lift heavy objects on a regular basis. Good communication skills are also important to work well with other employees. A high school diploma is required for this position, and prior work experience as an equipment operator is highly beneficial. Operating certificates are also helpful.
