Job Description for Executive Director, Human Resources (HR)
An executive director of human resources is responsible for the operation of a company's human resources department. This person is responsible for many tasks, including the development and implementation of organizational programs; employee orientation and training programs; benefits plans; database management procedures; and employee records. In addition, they may also be responsible for recruiting and hiring, negotiating labor contracts, and employee retention. Executive directors of human resources also supervise lower-level human resources staff and report to the company's chief executive officer (CEO). Individuals in this position generally must hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business, human resources, management, or a related field, though a Master’s degree is often preferred. A minimum of five years of experience in human resources is generally needed, and certifications in business or management may be beneficial.
Executive directors of human resources work entirely indoors in climate-controlled conditions. Their hours are generally standard office hours, Monday through Friday, with holidays off. Occasional travel and overtime may be required depending upon the organization.
