For laborers doing farmwork, the level of responsibility depends upon employee ability and experience. Entry-level workers may do mostly manual labor involving distributing and shoveling soil and fertilizer, participating in harvesting, and picking ripe fruits and vegetables. More experienced farmworkers may be asked to operate tractors, tillers, and other automated farm machinery. This can even include pulling soil samples for the farmer or supervisor to analyze for irrigation and fertilizer purposes. In a nursery or greenhouse setting, an employee may have less acreage and crops or plants to worry about, but this person will also be expected to be more hands-on with all crops, trees, and other plants assigned to him or her. These workers will almost certainly be asked to help with collecting soil samples, delivering water and fertilizer, and performing any necessary transplanting work. Employees in this field also typically will do harvesting work during those seasons. In all cases, whether on a farm or a nursery, the laborer will be expected to be on the lookout for certain signs indicating adverse conditions for the crops so that a supervisor or horticulturalist can remedy the situation.
This is typically an entry-level job requiring little formal education. In some situations, experience can lead to less-intensive manual labor, but any employee in this field should expect hard work. Laborers and farmworkers tend to work outdoors in fields during all sorts of weather conditions. A prospective employee should also be able to comfortably lift heavy loads of 50 pounds or more. These workers typically work from very early morning through late afternoon during various shifts that cover all seven days in a given week.
