A field sales representative markets products directly to clients; often, they offer products that can be resold by the client. The representative may use visual aids to sell products. Public speaking and good communication skills are important as the position often requires creating presentations for clients. In this position, there is often also a minimum sales quota that needs to be met. Bonuses may be offered for productivity, though there is usually a fixed salary or hourly wage.
Some field sales representative positions require only a high school diploma, while others require a postsecondary degree. Both entry-level positions and positions requiring experience are available, and there are both full-time and part-time positions. Computer skills are important in this job to create reports and marketing materials and maintain communication with clients. When there is a store environment connected to the company, the field sales representative may also be tasked with motivating employees to create promotional material and effectively promote merchandise. Because travel may be required, a valid driver’s license is often needed for field sales representative positions.
