What do you wish you knew about your job when you first started out?
Finance Director in Dallas:
"Don't pigeon-hole your career."
Be open to other opportunities outside of Finance that may come available to round yourself out, gain exposure to other leaders, and learn all you can about the organization.
Finance Director in Maple Grove:
"Attention to detail and ethics are key."
Surround yourself with the most seasoned accountants in your hiring range. I don't recommend entry level accountants for a corporate environment unless it is A/R, A/P, or Payroll.
Finance Director in Chicago:
"Time and people management is key. Planning is critical."
This is a high stress job in some companies. Plan ahead and manage up as well as down. Make sure you have a good "right" hand that you can trust. If you don't know how to delegate learn to. Learn to mange people - they don't teach you that in school. You are only as good as the team you build.
