Fleet supervisors must ensure that insurance is in order for each vehicle and the proper forms are filled out prior to dispatch, and they are also responsible for ensuring that these vehicles are inspected and well-maintained at all times. They may oversee repairs to ensure that they adhere to laws and regulations, and they also monitor expenses to identify trends and ways to reduce and mitigate costs, such as replacement parts, labor hours, equipment, and fuel. These supervisors may also schedule and coordinate the work of internal and external employees.
Research may occasionally be necessary to determine the most cost-effective way to maintain the fleet, and inventory duties are also necessary. Some employers require prior experience and training in mechanics for this position.
