Job Description for Flight Operations Manager

Flight operations managers work for airline companies in the transportation industry, while some also work for large corporations which maintain their own planes and/or helicopters. These managers are responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating their organizations' transportation operations and must ensure that flights run efficiently and safely in accordance with established rules and regulations from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). They must also adhere to local government rules related to issues such as noise and pollution.

Flight operations managers supervise and manage the work of subordinate staff to ensure that it complies with company rules, policies, and procedures, and they may conduct employee-evaluation reviews and provide timely feedback to staff. They may also interview, hire, and terminate employees, and they should have computer skills and understand their organizations' computer systems and software. They must also be able to use databases to conduct research and analyses.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs is often necessary in this position, as are strong communication and interpersonal skills. A bachelor's degree in a relevant field may be required for this position, and years of experience in the industry may also be required.
Flight Operations Manager Tasks
  • Manage day-to-day activities including flight dispatch, airworthiness assessments, and general communications.
  • Ensure that pilots and flight crew are qualified and trained.
  • Optimize flight schedule and monitor budget and service quality.
  • Coordinate with maintenance and assess the weather to provide timely, safe, clean air transit.
