A director of foundation relations usually works for a university or other educational institution and helps to secure funding, grants, and gifts from private foundations and corporations. This director should contact foundations by meeting representatives in person or via the phone, electronic communications, or postal mail. The director will create proposals and letters that will be submitted to foundations. It is also important to work with the financial department to create reports of how the money was allocated that should be passed on to the foundations. The director of foundation relations will need to periodically create forecasts as to how much money needs to be raised and where this money will go. Then the director will strive to meet these goals. Success in this job will be judged by the success rate of obtaining grants and how much money that was raised. It is also important to work with various departments within the university in order to adequately determine their funding needs.
Usually, this job takes place in an office environment during standard daytime hours. However, some travel will be necessary in order to meet with foundation representatives. Usually a bachelor’s degree is necessary to obtain this position. Experience carrying out similar work is also needed. It may also be important to be able to demonstrate past success in obtaining funding.
