Job Description for Foundry Worker
Foundry workers are often employed in confined factory or shop environments to melt metals and create castings from molds. They also finish the metal products, often by manually sanding, to create the desired results. Metal products may be created on a mass scale or simply to fulfill specific one-time needs for clients. Some molds may be created with AutoCAD software, so prior experience with this software may be necessary.Read More...
Physical strength is important in order to walk and stand for long periods of time, as well as bend, stoop, and lift heavy items. Items will need to be removed from castings and machines, which requires good manual dexterity, and the use of hand and power tools is occasionally necessary. The work may also involve operating a forklift in order to move products from one place to another, so forklift-related certification may be required by some employers.
The position of a foundry worker may require experience, though some entry-level and apprenticeship positions are available, and a high school diploma may be a minimum requirement. Much of the work is done independently, so it's important to be able to adhere to deadlines and pay close attention to detail to produce the desired results. Some jobs offer commission based on quality and quantity of production. (Copyright 2017 PayScale.com)
