Funeral attendants work in funeral homes with families of the deceased. Strong communication skills are important in this position in order to demonstrate knowledge and help clients feel at ease at all times. It is very important for funeral home attendants to have sensitivity toward various cultures and religions and knowledge of how different people honor the deceased. There may be some minimum physical requirements, as assistants may assist in moving the deceased from one place to another or be present at the initial removal of the body from the place where the person passed away. It is important to be professional, but also to demonstrate compassionate care in crucial times when clients need it most.
A valid driver’s license may be required, as attendants may also be responsible for driving a hearse or other vehicle in a funeral procession. Those in this position may also have basic office duties, such as carrying out inventory, answering phone calls, and greeting customers.
