Job Description for Furniture Upholsterer

A furniture upholsterer layers fabric on new or existing sofa frames using hand tools and power tools; sometimes sewing machines are used in this work as well. Tasks performed by upholsterers include removing old sofa parts such as coverings, webbings and springs, as well as replacing sofa covers, stuffing pillows and other parts of the sofa, and fixing broken springs. All tasks must be performed within deadlines and to the standards of their employer and clients. Furniture upholsters may also provide input to clients on designs and color schemes for upholstery. These professionals must have the ability to physically perform duties of their position, such as lifting heavy objects, bending, stooping and standing for long periods of time. A furniture upholsterer can work for a company or directly with clients on a freelance basis.
