Job Description for Gas Fitter
Gas fitters generally work for companies which provide gas service operations and/or maintenance for residential and commercial buildings. They must fit pipes and fuse sockets and other parts together, and it's very important to get the correct fits in order to prevent leaks. They are also responsible for installing monitoring equipment and meters, soldering, and welding, so proficiency with welding equipment and equipment such as jackhammers, power fasteners, and drills is important in this position.Read More...
It is essential that gas fitters adhere to safety protocols at all times in order to avoid accidents. They are also required to be able to lift heavy items and bend and stoop to assist other staff members in digging to reach pipes. They may occasionally have to work in uncomfortable situations, such as confined environments or in harsh weather conditions to reach certain areas of the pipes. Cleanliness is also important, and work areas should always be left as they were prior to any work being done.
Communication skills are important in this position, as gas fitters generally work on teams; however, individual tasks are often carried out independently, so it is important to be self-motivated in order to complete projects in a timely manner. Some jobs require a minimum of a high school diploma, and a valid driver’s license is generally required to travel to different work locations.
