As general counsel, it is important to have not only good legal skills, but also you are usually a member of upper management. It is imperative to understand the legal and business needs of the business and to be an active participant in resolving problems and building the business. This requires general counsel to take a proprietary interest in the success of the business. Also, this is a position which benefits enormous from a broad range and extended time of experience and the attendant understanding, insight and maturity. General counsel also be very good at supervising and coordinating the work of different persons and work groups both in terms of day-to-day business and longer range plans and projects. General counsel must be able to prioritize and "juggle multiple balls" so to speak, because there often is not time to carefully analyze and research for the decisions that must be made on a daily basis.
