Although general maintenance workers may be contracted through a main employer to perform services as needed, many are also employed in-house by employers and organizations to perform maintenance as necessary. They commonly work in schools, factories, and businesses to maintain machinery and the premises, and they usually report to a maintenance supervisor who approves work orders, provides assignments, and oversees their performance.
General maintenance workers need a variety of skills and knowledge, as well as specific knowledge of their industry and their employers' needs. This means they may find themselves replacing lightbulbs one day, installing a door the next, and repairing an air conditioning unit in-between, or greasing machines in a factory or changing oil on a back hoe on a construction site. In all cases, strong communication skills are essential to coordinate with others and accomplish these tasks in a timely manner.
