Job Description for General Manager, Laundry
A general manager of laundry carries out managerial duties relating to the laundry of clothing, bed sheets, and other items. The laundry may deal with commercial items such as uniforms and hotel linens, in which case the manager will direct a staff that directly launders the items. This involves washing, drying, folding, and sometimes dry cleaning. Strong customer service skills are needed in both cases, as good relations with clients are important for the success of the laundry establishment. When customers have complaints about the quality of the work or the machines, the manager should work immediately to correct the issue. The manager should be able to monitor equipment to make sure that it is working properly and lend a direct hand in the laundry process whenever it is necessary. In a commercial setting, managers may also be expected to come up with the laundry policy and procedures, such as how the laundry is to be sorted.
Usually, a minimum of a high school diploma is needed. A few years of experience working with laundry may be needed since this is a management position. The manager will usually be expected to carry out general managerial duties, such as scheduling, hiring, and disciplining. Hours may vary, as some laundry establishments operate during the evening, while others have regular daytime hours. Minimum physical requirements like the ability to lift heavy items, bend and stoop, and stand for long periods of time may be necessary.
