A general manager of a manufacturing company oversees many operations related to the manufacture and distribution of goods and is usually responsible for hiring employees, providing feedback, and developing team-building strategies. They must provide motivation and general direction for employees and oversee the company's marketing efforts, and they may also establish sales goals and ensure that marketing strategies are followed by employees.
Manufacturing company GMs must ensure that employees adhere to all company operational and safety policies and applicable laws, and they may delegate projects and follow-up to ensure that team members are on-schedule and deadlines are being met. Because this is a higher-level position, many years of experience within the manufacturing field and/or leadership/management may be required, and they must always ensure that the company's service and quality are upheld while keeping costs low.
These GMs usually oversee multiple departments and should be able to work well with others to solve problems, and they may also assist with problems that arise in manufacturing processes. Computer skills and experience with Microsoft Word are often necessary for this position, and other software may also be used depending on the employer. A bachelor's degree or higher in a business-related field is generally required for this position.
