Job Description for Generator Technician

Generator technicians usually work in some sort of factory or industrial setting. They may be required for day or night shifts, depending on the products that their company specializes in. Typically, generator technicians will be dealing with very delicate gas engines. An important requirement is that the technicians are able to lift heavy barrels or related materials. The typical day will involve helping their supervisor with a number of common tasks. For that reason, technicians usually perform similar job duties on a daily basis. The main duty involves checking gas pressures inside of combustion engines. The supervisor will specify what levels are acceptable, and it will be up to the technicians to make sure that those levels are adhered to.

Generator Technician Tasks

  • Troubleshooting equipment and servicing generator components including alternators, wiring harnesses safety devices, shutdown switches, and battery systems.
  • Inspections, repairs, services and start-up load bank test requirements on equipment.
  • Apply proper engine technical skills in inspection, disassembly, failure analysis, assembly, diagnosis, and engine operating performance tests.
  • Perform repairs and services on all makes and models of generator sets.
  • Identify the problem and cause of failure through logical troubleshooting steps, determine corrective action through inspection of failed parts.
