Geographic information systems (GIS) administrators oversee a staff working with GIS software to generate and maintain data and/or maps. These professionals must lead a team in researching, analyzing, and integrating data to determine how to effectively display data using GIS. They perform managerial functions such as overseeing budgets, conducting project planning, providing guidance and discipline to their team as needed, negotiating contracts, and recruiting staff. A bachelor's degree in computer information systems (CIS), geographic information systems (GIS), computer science, engineering or another relevant field - and/or GIS certification - are generally required for this position. In addition, employers often require candidates to have previous experience as GIS administrators.
